About Us
The ANU College of Asia & the Pacific (CAP) leads intellectual engagement with the Asia-Pacific region through research, teaching and contributions to public debate, and seeks to set the international standard for scholarship concerning the region. The College hosts the largest number of regional experts and specialist academic programs in the English-speaking world, and plays a vital role in informing public policy and Australia’s intellectual engagement with the societies, cultures and economies of Asia and the Pacific.
For over 70 years, ANU Sinologists have pioneered new fields in Chinese studies and led the world in understanding Chinese societies. China expertise at ANU is housed in several academic departments across the College and elsewhere in the University, and is brought together by the Australian Centre on China in the World (CIW), which reflects the University’s and the Australian government’s commitment to deepening Australia’s understanding of and engagement with China.
The Opportunity
CIW is now seeking to appoint two Postdoctoral Fellows. The successful candidates will be expected to conduct research that deepens our understanding of the People’s Republic of China, Taiwan, or the Chinese diaspora, preferably with a focus on their interconnections in a globalised world.
One of the successful candidates will be expected to contribute to content and concepts for CIW’s online project, The China Story, comprising the China Story Yearbook and The China Story Blog.
The other candidate will be expected to serve as the Associate Editor of The China Journal, the world-leading academic journal of its kind.
The Postdoctoral Fellow will be a member of CIW, which is the hub for the study of China across the ANU campus. They will also have a formal attachment to one of the College’s four Schools, appropriate for their discipline and research expertise: the Coral Bell School of Asia-Pacific Affairs, the Crawford School of Public Policy, the School of Culture, History and Language or the School of Regulation and Global Governance.
Our Ideal Candidate
Applicants should have a PhD, or be awarded a PhD within six months of appointment commencement, in a relevant discipline, with a track record of fieldwork and research in China, and the ability to undertake research using Mandarin Chinese (written and spoken), where these qualities are relevant to the area of research.
