The rapid spread of COVID-19 around the world has heightened concerns about the unprecedented level of globalisation that characterises the world we live in. In Australia, these concerns tend to focus on our ‘excessive reliance’ on China. In addition to the increasingly prominent narrative that our dependency on a powerful, rising ‘non-ally’ poses threats to our national security, COVID-19 has provided an additional and very real risk to the health and well-being of all Australians. Accounting for a third of our total exports, the first quarter of negative GDP growth in China has inflicted substantial economic pain on vast swathes of the Australian economy, from fisheries, iron ore and LNG to higher education and tourism.

In conversations between Director of the ANU Australian Centre on China in World Associate Professor Jane Golley and Yun Jiang, director of China Policy Centre and an editor of the China Story blog. Our experts will be discussing the future of Australian-China relations as a result of the fallout of COVID-19. Interested participants will be able to zoom into the webinar and we will also be taking questions prior, as well as during the webinar discussion.
