About the opportunity 

The Deputy Director will support the Acting Director in carrying out the Centre’s strategic plan, helping to manage and refine the Centre’s key relationships across the university’s community of research, as well as with industry and community partners working on or with China.

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • assist in managing the Centre’s day to day affairs, liasing with academics and the University’s professional stasff to ensure the effective delivery of CSC programs
  • assist managing the CSC teram to ensure the Centre is working efficiently and effectively
  • develop and deliver a program of research seminars, workships and other academic events
  • oversee the delivery of the Centre’s communications and marketing strategy
  • conduct quality research related to China, including Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and overseas Chinese communities
  • decvelop and deliver support activities for the Centre’s HDR and ECR members
  • collaborate with relevant units within the University to facilitate student mobility to China
  • develop public engagement activities to raise the profile of the Centre within the wider community.

  • experience in strategic planning, event organising and project management for a research-led context
  • capacity to conduct quality research related to China (here including Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and overseas Chinese communities)
  • high level problem-solving skills and proven ability managing a broad range of competing demands
  • strong native or equivalent English writing (experience of variety of writing genres/contexts highly regarded, e.g. web/print, magazines, reviews – not only academic writing)
  • confidence in representing the Centre to key internal and external stakeholders, with excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • proficiency in one or more Chinese languages (knowledge of another Asian language highly regarded)
  • experience living and/or working in China or Asia
  • a relevant doctoral qualification or commensurate experience.

About us

The University of Sydney China Studies Centre commenced operations in January 2011. It was established to provide coordination and direction to the study of China and Chinese culture at the University.

As one of the University’s Multidisciplinary Initiatives, the Centre currently has over 300 academic members, in addition to student and associate members, drawn from every faculty, across 20 disciplines. In this way, the Centre fosters a multidisciplinary research engagement on and with China that is one of the largest, richest community’s of China expertise in Australia.

The Centre supports research and study of China, including through an annual grant program, regular seminars, professionalisation workshops, field trips and an international visiting fellow program. It also has a dedicated role engaging industry, government and the community in activities concerned with China, both in China and Australia. The Centre organises academic activities regarding China for a broad academic community and interested public, contributing to Australia’s knowledge of and engagement with China and the Chinese community.
