In 2014, Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed “fostering a strong sense of community for the Chinese Nation” as a cultural strategy for resolving ethnic issues. The proposal was reaffirmed in Xi’s report at last year’s 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and was subsequently written into the Constitution of the CPC. In this talk, the speaker will introduce the background to Xi’s strategy-making, analyze its policy implications, and discuss potential challenges to its implementation.
