Benjamin Penny, Director of the Australian Centre on China in the World, ANU, discusses how two cultures met on the southern coast of China and how the encounter had a profound effect half a world away.

Benjamin Penny’s research interests lie in religious and spiritual movements in modern and contemporary China; the interpretation of Chinese religions by westerners; medieval religious Daoism; and the history of the religions of Australian Chinese.
