Though it was once the capital of Imperial China, little of Datong’s former glory remains. It’s now the most polluted city in the country, the consequence of a now-declining mining industry. Mayor Geng wants to reverse its fortunes, but this involves relocating over half a million residents.

Perched on a cliff edge, high above a river gorge in China’s Sichuan province is Gulu village. Its precarious location has kept it isolated and insular for centuries. Once accessible only by ropes or wooden ladders, these days a steep, zigzagging path leads to the ramshackle cluster of houses.
